Cordura vs Ripstop: How to Choose and Source the Right Fabric for Technical Bags

The comparison in the title is one people make constantly, and it does not quite work. Cordura and ripstop are not two options on the same shelf. One is a brand, the other is a weave. You can buy a Cordura ripstop, and plenty of people do.
Getting that straight is the first useful step, because once you understand what each word is actually describing, choosing between fabrics stops being a matter of taste.
What Cordura actually is
Cordura is a brand name covering a family of high-tenacity nylon fabrics, licensed to mills that meet the standard. When someone says a bag is made of Cordura, they have told you roughly what class of fabric it is, and almost nothing about the specification.
What matters underneath the name is the yarn. High-tenacity nylon, spun and woven for abrasion resistance rather than softness. That is why Cordura turns up on the parts of a bag that get dragged along the ground, thrown into a car boot, and set down on wet pavement.
The brand exists because the performance is measurable and the licensing keeps it consistent. That consistency is worth paying for when you are buying across seasons and need this year’s fabric to behave like last year’s.
What ripstop actually is
Ripstop is a weave structure, not a fibre and not a brand. At regular intervals, usually every few millimetres, a thicker reinforcing thread is woven into the grid. You can see it. That faint square pattern in a lightweight bag or a tent is the ripstop grid.
The point of it is in the name. When the fabric gets punctured, the tear runs until it meets a reinforcing thread and stops there, instead of opening all the way across the panel.
Because it is a weave, ripstop can be made from almost anything. Nylon ripstop, polyester ripstop, cotton ripstop. And yes, Cordura ripstop, which is where the comparison in the title falls apart entirely.
Nylon or polyester, the choice underneath the choice
This decision affects more of your bag’s behaviour than the brand name on the swatch.
Nylon is stronger for its weight and more abrasion resistant. It absorbs more water, which means it can feel damp and get heavier, and it degrades faster under sustained UV. It generally costs more.
Polyester holds up better in sunlight, absorbs very little water, holds colour well, and costs less. It is less abrasion resistant at the same weight.
In practice the decision usually comes down to budget and feel rather than the technical comparison, and feel is not a small thing. Polyester carries a slightly cheaper reputation in most people’s minds, fairly or not, and if your product is asking somebody to pay a premium then perception is part of what you are selling. Nylon buys you a hand feel and an association that a spec sheet will not show.
Both recycle well, which surprises people. Recycled polyester, usually made from post-consumer bottles, is the most widely available recycled synthetic in textiles and is often cheaper and easier to source than recycled nylon. Recycled nylon exists and is good, but the supply chain is younger. If the sustainability story matters to your brand, polyester is the easier route to a credible one.
Coatings and laminates, where the waterproofing lives
The fabric alone is not what keeps water out. The finish does.
PU coating is the common, affordable route, applied to the back of the fabric in layers. You will see specifications like PU1500 or PU3x, referring to the water column rating in millimetres or the number of coats.
TPU costs more, stays flexible longer, and handles repeated folding better than PU, which is why it turns up on products expected to last.
DWR is a surface treatment that makes water bead rather than soak in. It is not waterproofing, it wears off with use, and it is worth asking whether the version you are being offered is PFC-free, often marked C0.
Laminates such as X-Pac are a different category. Rather than coating a woven cloth, they bond layers together, typically including a waterproof film and a reinforcing grid. The result is waterproof, dimensionally stable, and structured in a way that gives a bag its shape. They cost considerably more and they are harder to sew.
If a product needs to be genuinely waterproof rather than water resistant, the fabric is only part of the answer. Seams, zippers and construction decide the rest.
Sourcing, which is where the real constraints appear
A fabric you cannot buy in your quantity is not a fabric you can use.
Minimums usually sit around 500 to 600 yards per colour. That is the number to design against. If the fabric has been discontinued and would have to be woven again from greige, meaning fabric woven but not yet dyed or finished, you are looking at something nearer 10,000 yards, which is a different scale of business entirely.
Stock colours change everything. A mill holding your colour in stock can often sell you a small quantity at short notice. The same fabric in a custom colour puts you back at the full minimum plus a dye lot and a wait.
Lead times move more than prices do, and there is no useful average to quote you. It depends on the mill, the quantity, the country and the factory, and the same fabric can come back with very different answers from two suppliers. Ask every time, early, and treat the answer as part of the specification rather than a detail to sort out later.
Recycled options are now mainstream across both fibres. The performance gap has largely closed and the price gap has narrowed, so if sustainability is part of your brand you no longer have to compromise much to get there.
Three questions to ask about every fabric, in this order: what is the minimum, what is the lead time, and has this factory sewn it before. The third one catches people out. A cloth your factory has never handled will cost you sampling rounds while they work out how it behaves under their machines.
